3 Things To Do On Sundays To Have A Productive Week

Image
Write A To-Do List The best way to start your week is to take some time to anticipate the week ahead, and do what you can do to prepare for it. Even if it is just writing and queueing up emails to be sent first thing Monday, or thinking about how you want to approach a project in the coming week, it is time well spent to help a busy week go smoothly. If you have a lot to accomplish this week, write it all down to make sure nothing slips through the cracks. Begin the list with your priorities and hardest deadlines, then refine to make it efficient. If you have a meeting in the same neighborhood as the dry cleaner, make sure to put that in your calendar so you can pick it up right after your meeting. Is the grocery store by your child’s school? Then swing by the grocery store before or after picking up your child. Being thoughtful with your schedule will make sure you get everything done when you need to, in the most efficient way possible. 8 Ways To Get People To Take You More Seriously

Image
Do you ever feel like nobody takes you seriously at work? If so, you’re not alone. More than 50% of people don’t feel respected at work, according to a global survey of more than 20,000 employees by the Harvard Business Review . Maybe colleagues ignore your input in meetings. Perhaps they interrupt you or don’t include you in important decisions. It’s easy to blame that on a bad boss or a toxic work environment. In some cases, that’s even true. But if you really want to be taken more seriously at work, you should start by looking in the mirror and doing what you can to increase your influence. There are eight things you can do right now to increase your credibility, get people to take you more seriously, and ensure you get treated with the respect you deserve. 1. Don’t let your statements sound like questions. One of the most common things people do to undermine their credibility is end their sentences on a higher inflection than where they started. It’s c

3 body language tricks to appear more powerful

Image
Whether you're a newly promoted manager or a longtime boss, it's important to come across as strong and competent in front of your employees. There really aren't many quick fixes when it comes to actually being a good boss.At a basic level, you simply need to treat people with respect and do your job to the best of your ability. However, there are a few tricks you can adopt if you'd like to appear more powerful (which, in certain cases, is half the battle). Business Insider recently spoke with Dr. Lillian Glass , a communications and body language expert and author of " Toxic People ." Glass shared a few tips on how bosses can appear more powerful using body language: 1. Straighten your posture Sitting up straight won't just make you look better in front of your employees. It'll actually boost your confidence — at least momentarily. As WGN TV previously reported , a 2016 Northwestern University stu

A group of engineers found a way to send a password through your skin

Image
A man with one hand in his pocket approaches a locked door and places his other hand on the doorknob. A second later, the deadbolt clicks open, as if by magic, and he lets himself in. A would-be burglar casing the house watches this sequence of events unfold. The next day, after the man has left for work, the burglar approaches the door and places his hand on it, expecting it to pop open. Instead, it stays stubbornly locked. It’s not outfitted with a typical “smart lock,” which uses Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to open when a paired phone or watch is nearby. It’s not reading his fingerprint, either. So what’s going on? A similar scenario recently unfolded in the University of Washington’s Networks and Mobile Systems Lab, where researches are experimenting with a new technology that sends passcodes through the human body. The technology uses touchpads and fingerprint readers to create signals that travel through skin—and, unlike wireless broadcasts,

11 things unsuccessful people do over the weekend

Image
Everybody's working for the weekend, but how you spend your two days off may say something about how successful you are. What you get up to doesn't really matter, per se. If you prefer lounging around the house to spontaneous adventures, that's great! You probably need that time to wind down. When it comes to weekends, the main thing that separates successful people from unsuccessful people is mindfulness . Are you planning ahead and truly thinking about how to spend your free time? Here are 11 things that unsuccessful people tend to do over the weekend — and why to avoid them: They don't have a plan Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums/Flickr Not every minute of every hour of your weekend needs to be planned out, but it's good to have a general idea of what you'd like to do or get done —  even if you're just scheduling downtime . This pill could make your dog (and maybe you) live longer

Image
"It's been remarkable," Paola Anderson said as she watched Momo, her 13-year-old white Pomsky, run around the backyard, keeping up with dogs a third his age. The drug is called rapamycin. After nearly a decade of research showing that it makes mice live up to 60% longer, scientists are trying it out as an anti-aging drug in dogs and humans. Rapamycin was discovered nearly 50 years ago in soil collected from Easter Island in the South Pacific and studied in a Canadian lab, and it's the most promising drug to fight aging that Arlan Richardson has ever seen. A professor at the Reynolds Oklahoma Center on Aging, Richardson has been doing this kind of research for 40 years. "It's the best bet we have," he said. Now, scientists are moving forward and testing the drug in dogs. Researchers at the University of Washington's Dog Aging Project gave rapamycin to 16 dogs and imaged their hearts. "It started to function better. It sta

A 4-year-old who overdosed on vitamins reveals why we should never have told people to start taking them

Image
A 4-year-old boy in England was recently taken to the emergency room after he'd spent weeks vomiting and losing weight. After tests revealed the boy had extraordinarily high calcium and vitamin D levels, one of the boy's parents told doctors that they'd been feeding him 12 different dietary supplements, including a mixture of vitamins, oils, and minerals. The boy's blood calcium level was almost twice the range considered normal for someone his age, and his vitamin D level was more than 20 times the normal level, according to a detailed case report published Thursday in the BMJ . The boy had autism but no previous health issues, according to the report. These vitamin levels can be dangerous and toxic. Most children don't need to be given supplements (if you're considering feeding them to your child, talk with your doctor first). "Multivitamins aren't necessary for most healthy children who are growing no

From prison to paragon: These beautiful buildings were former jails

Image
Photos: Former prisons transformed for a second lease on life Pentridge Prison, Melbourne, Australia – Australia's Pentridge Prison housed some of the nation's most notorious criminals -- from outlaw Ned Kelly to Ronald Ryan, who was the last man to be executed in the country. But a private buyer took over the site in 2013 and is changing it into a mixed-used residential and commercial development, complete with a luxury Adina Apartment Hotel.   Jails are not the first place people typically look to for design inspiration. For the most part they are brutalist, utilitarian blocks that are built to house row after row of prison cells and which offer altogether dismal living conditions.   But a few disused penitentiaries have had their potential unlocked by redevelopers -- and in these second leases on life, former jails have been transformed into everything from luxury hotels to schools, shopping complexes, or even a film lot.
